Reduced Physical Waste
- One computer per employee policy - fewer machines to be surveyed, fewer software licenses for units to purchase, less electricity used
- Network printers - fewer machines to end up in a landfill, longer service life than desktop printers, double sided printing capability and electronic faxing reduces printing cost and paper waste.
Reduced Electrical Use
- One computer per employee policy - even on standby, a computer will draw power. Thus, if employees have only one computer, less electricity is being used
- Network printers - as with computers, printers on standby draw power, therefore by reducing the number of printers in use, less electricity is needed
- Nighttime updates - employees are encouraged to turn their computers off when they leave the office for the day. AP-IT uses software to turn on computers during the night, install needed updates, and then turn the computer off. This reduces the electicity being used and also reduces employee waiting time when updates are done during the day.
Reduced Travel & Time
- AP-IT uses Microsoft's Office Communicator Service (OCS) to provide help desk support at a distance, by viewing and controling someone's computer - via the internet - when they are having a techincal problem. It also provides instant messaging & video conferences for individual face-to-face conversations, group meetings and training sessions without the need for travel time.
- SCCM allows AP-IT to push out software updates and installations to individuals across campus without an AP-IT physically touching the computers. SCCM's inventory tracking and operating system deployment also saves employee time & travel while rolling out new computers and reporting on what is currently in use.
- Network Printers - printers attached to the network can often be controlled via the internet, thus reducing the need for AP-IT to physically diagnose and fix problems with the printer.
